Lady Boomer Survey Results Released by The Kitchens Group

I’m a numbers junkie.  My husband and I have a market research firm and conduct surveys and focus groups for a variety of issues throughout the country.  So, I conducted an online survey of Lady Boomers between the ages of 46-65.  Thanks to sites like Boomer Café and Vibrant Nation, almost 600 women were surveyed about issues ranging from their spiritual and creative lives, children, careers, and even the characteristics and traits defining them as people.  

A particularly noteworthy finding in the survey revealed the Boomerang Phenomenon is alive and well living in Mom and Dad’s increasingly cluttered nest.  I doubt if you have to ask, but just in case…boomerang kids are those young adults who leave home with youthful idealism and excitement about the adventures awaiting them, only to ricochet back to their rooms when life out of the nest, with its pesky responsibilities, thwarts their efforts at independence.

More than half (52%) of Generation Xers and Millenials have moved back home or are financially dependent upon their boomer parents.  Survey results indicate 1 in 5 of these boomerang kids are still on the family dole.  Money isn’t the only issue either.  Sixty percent of the Lady Boomers participating in this online survey say they are 911 on their children’s cell phones.  The survey asked, When your grown children have a problem, do they usually call (1) Mom- 60%, (2) Dad- 8% or (3) do they tend to handle the issue on their own-32%.   These results as well as others documented in the survey indicate Lady Boomers really have managed to “do it all”- be available to their kids and be workaholics in their careers (56% work more than 40 hours a week).

The first baby boomers are turning 65 this year (2011).  Ten thousand (10,000) baby boomers will be turning 65 every day for the next nineteen years.  The Baby Boom population is 79 million strong, with 51% comprised of boomer women.  While there is considerable data available on baby boomers, I wanted to conduct a deeper exploration of women of this age (since I too am one of these Lady Boomers).  Who are we?  What motivates us?  How did we get here?  What are we going to do with the rest of our lives?  Rumor has it over half the Baby Boomers in America are going to celebrate their 100th birthday and beyond.  How do you intend to live your next 40 year?  Post a comment and let me know.
